Historical figures such as John Anderson, William Arrol, John MacAdam, William Murdock, Thomas Telford, James Napier and James Watt gave to the world engineering knowledge that initiated and accelerated the Industrial Revolution.
Eminent Scottish Academics, such as William Thomson, Lord Kelvin of the eponymous temperature scale, and William Rankine, of the other eponymous temperature scale and the steam cycle, added to the Scottish reputation for excellence and innovation in engineering.
Many of these figures were responsible for the rise of the Institutions in the United Kingdom that promoted and encouraged the profession of Engineering in its various form.
